Nothing But Time
March 26, 2010 – 10:10 amHere we are ready to get growing for another garden season and I’m just getting around to editing the balcony garden journal footage from 2009. I like how my journal has moved from its original large sketchbook format in 1989 to an online version in 2001 to the movie clip version in 2009. That’s 20 years of growing notes.
But no matter how I’ve chosen to track my progress, my journal reminds me of the many plants I carefully selected, planted and nurtured. And a few that didn’t make it. Gardening history indeed.

WHAT is that tree in the first shot? The bark is gorgeous!
The video seems to be a great method for cataloging your garden. And a combo of wide shots and closeups paint a really nice picture. Bravo!

Hi Erin
It’s a larch and I agree, the bark has a beautiful texture. I have a couple of these slow-growing, small trees in two different alpine troughs on the balcony. One is 4 years old. In the video you see it in the spring when it has its feather-like clusters of new needles. Larch drop their needles every fall. They are native to Alberta and are found at higher altitudes at the treeline. In the fall they turn a spectacular golden colour, just before they drop their needles. I’m always amazed that they winter over in the troughs.

Love the series of balcony photos in your titles! The way that people find ways to give themselves a little green never ceases to amaze me.
Cheers

Hello. I just wanted to let you know I’m all over your blog this evening. I’m especially enjoying your Plant Journal & Get Gardening – Alpines pages. So inspiring.
The “new look” is great, though I also loved the previous design of your blog.
